I have my own personal tumblr here. Basically I am just a poor college student who wants to study film or tv production but wasn't able to go to film school right away. I decide to teach myself as much as I could last year and I thought this would be a really fun project for me to do in 2012. This is a place for all the movies I watch and will probably include a review and rating :) Feel free to leave me any recs.
A year in film

I like older men. They’re so grateful.”

Ok so this is the first speaking film I actually saw Greta Garbo in. I can pretty much say this is a complete turn around from Flesh and the Devil. It was actually quite nice and refreshing to see Greta laughing and dancing and just having fun. It certainly looked like she enjoyed the part and her dancing in this was great. As a film though, as much as I love George Cukor this just isn’t my favorite. Maybe it was just the storyline or I can’t really put my finger on it because the acting was good. Overall, I would say this movie is pretty enjoyable to watch but I think next time I want to see funny Greta I might give Ninotchka a shot!

Watching a movie now. And had seen another already. Expect me to start updating reviews tomorrow :)

✰| 007. | Rubber (2001) Rating: 5/10

You probably never gave it a thought, but all great films, without exception, contain an important element of no reason. And you know why? Because life itself is filled with no reason. Why can’t we see the air all around us? No reason. Why are we always thinking? No reason. Why do some people love sausages and other people hate sausages? No fucking reason.

Ok so without a doubt this is definitely the weirdest movie I have seen so far. Now a disclaimer before I start my review this is just my personal opinion. I don’t want to seem ignorant or not open minded but this is just my thoughts on the film. From what I hear the reviews on this movie are very hit or miss. I think it’s important to find middle ground in there somewhere. This movie is basically about a killer tire that comes to life and has psychokinetic powers. On one hand, I thought the movie was really innovative and humorous but the thing is this is one of those movies were you are like “What the fuck am I watching?” for an hour and then when you think deeply later you are like wow this was really smart. The thing is I just hate watching those types of movies. To me those movies are usually memorable for the wrong reasons. Personally there is some great filmmaking advice to be taken out of this so I am glad I watched it and picked up on that but personally this is not a favorite at all.

✰| 006. | Spirited Away (2001) Rating: 9/10

“Once you meet someone, you never really forget them.”

This is one of my absolute favorite movies of all time and one of my favorite stories out of all the studio Ghibli films I have seen. There is beautiful animation throughout the whole movie and I just love how intricate the bath house is. The story describes Chihiro and her journey to free her parents after they were trapped in the spirit world and turned into pigs. Throughout the story the theme of growing up and reconciling your past with your new identity is often brought up. Over all I would definitely recommend this movie and re-watch it again.

Hey Just wanted to let you guys know I haven’t abandoned this blog. Still watching the movies but I am trying to finish my college apps this week and then I will continue writing the reviews. Thank you for sticking with me :)

✰| 005. | Flesh and the Devil (1926 | Rating: 9/10 | Recommended by queenkayla

This film was recommended to me by Kayla since I wanted to watch more stuff with Greta Garbo and seeing as she is the biggest Garbo fan out of anyone I follow, it would only make sense to get film recs from her. This is actually my first silent film (I know I might get a lot of hate for that but I only got really serious about film 5 months ago and at least I want to learn and I’ve been open to watching more stuff so I hope you guys forgive me.) There is so much I want to say about this film so I’ll try to be concise but it’s going to be really hard. First of all, I wanted to say how much this film put into perspective all the advances that have been going on in both society and the film industry. I don’t know whether it was because this was my first silent or the fact that we live in a world where people multitask so much but I honestly found it a little hard to sit still through this for two hours. At first I took a few breaks until I got accustomed to the whole process of watching a silent. With this being said, I also want to acknowledge the talent that these actors had for conveying emotion subtly on screen. Greta conveyed seductiveness and she exudes more sexuality with just her mannerisms and body language alone compared to stars today. Gilbert and Hanson are so comfortable with each other that they are perfect in acting out the role of best friends with a keen sense of brothership. The cinematography in this was brilliant. The lighting helped accentuate the scenes, not to mention the scenes in the church where Leo and Felicitas were side by side both garbed in black while Hertha was always placed aside them in the position of prayer dressed with lighter clothing. It’s that small attention to detail that really makes scenes in a movie unforgettable. The two juxtaposed story lines are marvelous; the blood brothers with an unbreakable bond and a passionate love affair between Leo and Felicitas. Finally, I can’t leave out the scene at the station where Leo and Felicitas first meet. This also happened to be the first meeting of Garbo and Gilbert and if you follow my other blog you know that there is nothing I enjoy more that capturing two people falling in love on film.  Overall I thought this was an extremely well done film.

✰| 004. | Monkey Business (1952) | Rating: 10/10

After the influx of people reblogging this movie on my dash I knew it was time I watch it as well. Now when I watch a movie I try not to be biased but I pretty much knew I was going to like this before seeing it. The move stars Cary Grant and Ginger Rogers who are two of my favorite actors and it’s directed by Howard Hawks whose movies I really enjoy. The movie is basically about a chemist who is trying to work on a formula that will eliminate the detrimental effects of aging. What the formula actually does is make everyone act young and craziness ensues. This movie was a hoot! Absolutely hilarious. I was laughing out loud so much. The parts where Cary and Ginger start acting like like children were my favorite. Cary Grant is a comedic genius especially in the scenes with the children. Marilyn Monroe was also in this and although I feel bad that they always make her play the dumb blonde, she was still funny in this as well. Over all I loved this and I really love comedy in older movies as opposed to the current fad of making the most mindless things funny. This is the funniest thing I’ve seen in 2012 so far.

✰| 003. | The Gay Divorce (1934) | Rating: 7/10

Like all the other movies from this pairing Astaire and Rogers have marvelous chemistry. You can definitely tell this is only their second movie together though. While some dance numbers were good their dancing wasn’t as on par as it was in their other movies. Also Mimi’s aunt Hortense got annoying really fast. Besides the fact that the movie drags on in some parts it is still cute and watchable. It may not be my favorite movie of Ginger and Fred’s but it’s not bad.

✰| 002. | Howl’s Moving Castle (2004) | Rating: 9/10| requested by japanesecase

As per request my second movie watched was Howl’s Moving Castle. I will admit at first I was a bit apprehensive as I always am with musical or cartoon movies but have always been I really huge fan of Hayao Miyazaki’s work and this movie definitely did not disappoint. I love Miyazaki’s usage of themes in his movie and the way which he effectively uses story telling to evoke emotion and also provoke viewers to think. I love that he has strong female characters and I like that this movie brought up pacifism and also the journey of self growth and acceptance. I think that the fact that this movie had simplistic animation with beautiful attention to detail and that this is juxtaposed with Mitazaki’s themes really enriches the whole movie and makes for an amazing viewing experience. The characters are so beautifully drawn that you want to reach out and grab them and there is also great character development; you can empathize with everyone. In addition to all of this, the movie also had an amazing cast with Jean Simmons, Christian Bale and Lauren Bacall. Basically I am not really going to give away the plot because I want people to watch this. Although I will admit it took me a while to understand some parts of the movie I didn’t really mind; in fact I liked it better. I would recommend this to everyone. It was an awesome movie.

✰| 001. | Follow The Fleet (1936) | Rating: 6/10

Started off my new year with this since I’ve been on a Fred and Ginger kick lately. I know I know what you are thinking but it was 5 am and I hadn’t seen this and it was one of the first movies I found. Not my favorite but still watchable. It was adorable to see Fred playing the part of a navy man and I really enjoyed Ginger’s tap solo. The only thing about this movie us that the plot drags on and on and I didn’t really care too much for the subplot with the sister (by the middle of the movie I was calling her the no1curr sister and waiting for Fred and Ginge to get back to the screen) Either way it was a fun watch.
